MUSIC IN CLASS

The last day I could not attend class and according to my classmates, I missed a super fun lesson.
This day my classmates were learning English while singing songs, individually, as a group or in pairs. In addition, they were talking about all the benefits that this has in class.

SOME OF THE BENEFITS OF LEARNING ENGLISH USING SONGS

1. The songs can be both RELAXING and STIMULATING, so they encompass a variety of purposes in the classroom according to the objective we intend to achieve (relax or stimulate the students).

2. The songs promote SIGNIFICANT AND FUNCTIONAL LEARNING, since they use real and contextualized language (according to the meaning of the song).

3. The use of music in the classroom increases the CONCENTRATION, MOTIVATION AND ATTENTION of the students.

4. The songs help to CHANGE THE RHYTHM of the class when the teacher needs it (change of task, change of topic ...)

5. The atmosphere that is created in the classroom when the music is used is of COOPERATION AND CLOSURE between the students among themselves and between them with the teacher.

6. Work with music fosters CREATIVITY AND IMAGINATION of students.

7. The songs serve both to work with the VOCABULARY, SOUNDS, SYNTATIC FUNCTIONS, RHYTHM, ENTONATION, GRAMMATICAL STRUCTURES and other aspects of learning the foreign language.

8. The work with songs in class activates the REPETITION MECHANISMS of the acquisition of the foreign language, eliminating the possibility that the students get bored.

9. The songs facilitate the UNDERSTANDING AND EXPRESSION of the language both ORAL and WRITTEN, in addition to the complementary work between the VERBAL language (lyrics of the song) and NOT VERBAL (movements or dances).

10. Music, by encompassing so many topics, allows you to connect with any INTERDISCIPLINARY CONTENT.

11. The use of songs in the classroom allows to connect linguistic topics with CULTURAL and / or social THEMES about the same songs.

12. The current songs (current pop songs, for example) make students see the DIRECT RELATIONSHIP between the work in the classroom and their REALITY outside of it (authentic material for daily use).

13. Learning through music and song lyrics ACTIVATE BOTH CEREBRAL HEMISPHERES, so learning is much more effective.

14. Through the songs you can work ALL THE SKILLS that the teacher needs to work with the students: reading, listening, speaking, writing and interaction.
